for lesbians

Many lesbian women dream of finding lifelong love and settling down for a life together with someone special. It can be difficult to know where to start in finding your mate, but some self reflection and preparation can set the stage for meeting the right person and creating a lasting relationship. This reflection and preparation is especially important in a straight-biased society where finding a lifelong lesbian mate involves more than just stopping to talk with another woman at the supermarket.
Before you can start dating, you need to think about what you are looking for in a relationship and what your priorities are. List qualities that you would like to find in a woman, such as someone who is caring, spiritual or wants children. You also need to list characteristics or qualities that would be a deal breaker for you in a relationship, such as someone who is dishonest or who wants very different things from you. Consider how you might deal with family members of a lover who are not accepting of your lesbian relationship, or whether you need to find someone who can handle your family if it is less than supportive of your sexual orientation. You will not be able to find a woman who fits everything you are dreaming of, but you might be able to find a woman who fits some of the most important positive criteria and does not have any of your deal breakers. Being clear on what you are looking for in a woman is especially important considering additional prejudices and societal stereotypes you might need to confront as a lesbian couple.
Prepare For A Relationship
Now you must make sure you are ready to give what is needed in a relationship. Be sure you are not carrying around any baggage from past relationships, or that you are not harboring any major leftover issues from your coming out process. Take the time to take care of yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually so you can be emotionally available to love another woman. If you find that you are having difficulty processing your own emotions or working through past issues, seeing a therapist for a few sessions can help you to process these things so that you do not bring them into a new relationship. Find a therapist that specializes in working with the LGBTQ community.
Put Yourself Out There
You will not meet prospective girlfriends by isolating yourself and merely thinking about it. You need to put yourself out there and get to know people. Consider posting on lesbian dating boards in order to find people who are looking for similar things. You might also join a LGBTQ community center, choir or sports team in order to find like-minded women who you might be interested in. Try going out to LGBTQ musical establishments and clubs with friends and keeping an eye out for women who interest you.
Once you start dating women you are interested in, make sure to evaluate things as you go. Create a list of questions that you want to ask anyone that you get involved with and make sure to ask these questions early on in your dating. Ask to hear the coming-out story of your lover and learn about her process of discovering and embracing her sexual orientation. If she is new to coming out, you may want to approach the relationship with some caution and at a slower pace to give her the space she might need as she continues to discover who she is as a lesbian woman.
If a particular woman is not a match, move on before you are emotionally invested. Every moment you spend with the wrong woman is a moment you could be using to find the right one. If someone does seem like the right woman for you, remember to take your time and get to know each other slowly. Take your time in introducing one another to family members and friends, especially if family members are not supportive of your sexual orientation. Building a firm foundation to your relationship and taking your time will help you enjoy happiness for many years to come.
