For lesbians who have recently come out of the closet, it can be a
difficult and daunting task trying to seek out other lesbians. It is
very common to feel as though you're the lone lesbian in a heterosexual
world. In some ways, it's easier for gay men since there are so many gay
bars, gay clubs, gay cruises, gay male choruses, etc. But what's out
there for lesbians? Here are some good starting points for meeting other
lesbians in your community.
Lesbian bars
Duh. Lesbian bars
might lack the wild and carefree appeal that gay bars have, attracting
gay men, straight women, and all sorts of other types in between.
However, they are a great place to meet lesbians. And that's what you're
looking for, right? If you can't find a lesbian bar, go online and do a
little research on google and I'm pretty sure you will find one near
you. Even smaller cities and towns tend to have at least one lesbian bar
tucked away somewhere, so go out there and find it.
Gay and lesbian center
If
you aren't quite ready for dating, but want to get more acquainted with
the lesbian community, a gay and lesbian center is the perfect place to
get started. There is lesser pressure when compared to a bar setting
and you can also take part in the various activities as well. If there's
a gay and lesbian center in your town, you should definitely check it
out and see what kind of programs they offer. It can be an excellent
resource for meeting other lesbians and bisexual women in your
neighborhood.
Women's sports teams
Okay, this is a little
stereotypical, but the odds are that if you join a local women's sports
team you will meet other lesbians. While I hate to make sweeping
statements, lesbians, especially butch, loves to engage in sporting
activities. Without lesbians, there would be no field hockey. Another up
and coming sport dominated by lesbians is roller derby. Take out your
aggression and meet women! In any case, many cities have established gay
and lesbian sports league, which is a superb way to meet more lesbians
living in the same city. But even if there isn't a lesbian-specific
sport team for you to join, being active in any women's sports will most
likely lead to meeting other lesbians. If it doesn't, at least you got
in shape!
Church
I'm not suggesting hanging out at the
Catholic Church or anything, but if you're religious, there are some
open-minded congregations out there that have gay and lesbian members.
Unitarian Churches are widely known for their liberal thinking and could
be the starting point for you to meet religious lesbians if you are
religious as well.
Gay neighborhoods
Almost every city has a
gay neighborhood, even if it's only one block long. Gay neighborhoods
typically have gay-owned shops and businesses as well as restaurants,
bars, and coffee shops frequented by gays and lesbians. Go out and hang
around in the neighborhood, talk to people in the gay bookshop or chat
up the cute girl at the gay coffee house. These all some of the best and
proven ways to find and locate fellow
